Crow

You’re black all over
Commonly seen outside houses
Is that how you got your name?
The Indians believe yu have their ancestors’ soul

You fly with grace
You share your food with you clan
You’re kind enough to
Raise Cuckoo’s chicks in your nest as your own!

Then, why don’t the bird-watchers heed you?
Why is none thrilled to look at you?
Why is none amazed to hear your caws?
Why would none like to write poems on you?

Poets write on Hawks and Ibis, not you
Some write on Robins and Kites, but you
Is it ‘cause you are soot black?
… or, are they racists?

Oh dear Crow!
Here I’m writing the first poem on you
Be happy…
you are not forgotten!

Dry Leaf

Dark brown in colour
Running veins all over
You amaze me!

Lovingly you care for us
Even though we pick
And burn you to ashes.
Forever we are indebted to you!

Spider

You spin your waxy, wobbly web
Shiny, sparkling and steadfast
As strong as solid steel.
When I touched it once,
It was sticky as well

Poisonous – some of you are.
But, only to your prey.
Once I felt sorry for a fly
that was caught in your trap.
But, that’s life – isn’t it?

A Black Widow – one of your clan
spins a 3D web, I heard today,
to catch her walking and flying prey.
What a name! I wonder.
Did she lose her dark husband?

My love for you started
When I first read ‘Charlotte’s web’
What a supreme sacrifice you did!
I had tears roll down my cheeks
Unto this day, I remember.

I find you everywhere -
Walls, trees, kitchenware!
You are one of nature’s myriad creations
Spider Oh! Spider
You simply fascinate me!
