Located on the banks of River Vaigai, Madurai is a city of ancient culture.
Since this land has been inhabited for more than two millennia, it is
considered one of the oldest cities of Tamil nadu.
Situated in the heart of the city, Meenakshi temple is
the epitome of beauty and architecture. It is so ancient that nobody knows when
exactly it was built, but is believed to have been erected at least before the
6th century. The temple houses 14 towers out of which the tallest
four almost touch the sky. It is fascinating to see the stunning paintings and sculptures
all over the temple premises. The yearly Chitra festival in April-May which
happens with a fanfare of events is an enjoyable month-long celebration to mark
the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.
Another attraction in Madurai is the Thirumalai Nayak
Palace which is an architectural feat of everlasting wonder. Showcasing Italian
architecture, this palace was constructed three centuries ago. Children love
the mammoth pillars here since 6 to 7 children need to hold hands and form a
circle to embrace one pillar!
A visit to Madurai isn’t complete without tasting the
heavenly Jigarthanda, an icy beverage that has originated in the city. It holds
a lot of cooling properties that can come in handy to fight the city’s
scorching climate during summer. Other things that are synonymous with Madurai
are closely-stringed jubilant jasmine flowers and the ever attractive Chungudi
cotton sarees to entice the ladies. The latest kids’ attraction is a new
multi-storey shopping mall that has sprung up here, called the Vishal De Mall.
Madurai is a place of rich tradition and truly a
heaven on earth. Whether you are a traveller or a pilgrim or a historian or a
mere lounger, the city has something to offer.
